Temporary
As I was sitting in an easy cross-legged seat this morning teaching my first class of the day, I suddenly, due to no particular reason, start to feel this sharp, shooting pain in my right knee. I have never had any problems with my right knee before, so, at first, I think it's nothing and I keep on teaching. However, the pain soon becomes unbearable, and although I keep on teaching, trying not to show that anything is wrong, I get up and try to walk. I keep giving cues, so people are staying in the flow, but my knee is talking to me at the same time.
I keep on walking around the room aimlessly, simply trying to make it go back to normal, thinking the further I walk, the more my pain will fade. At some point throughout the class people get confused about the cues and I try to show the pose, but I don't manage as the pain is still there and I cannot bend my knee.
I decide it's time to admit I am in pain and show my 'weakness' in front of my students. And although it might seem like a weakness, I remember it actually isn't. On the contrary. It's strength. Showing my students that I'm not perfect and that I can get injured too, is ultimately an act of courage. There was no judgement. Instead, there was understanding. Compassion.
Even though my knee seems to be better and is almost not hurting anymore, it got me thinking about my body and life in general. Everything is temporary in life. Our bodies are too. We tend to complain about mundane things on a daily basis and take important things for granted, like a healthy body. Only when something like an injury happens, and we suddenly get a glimpse of what it is like not to have a healthy, fully functioning body, we realise how important it actually is and how we should not take anything for granted.
We have one life in this beautiful body and sometimes it's important to acknowledge all this body of ours does for us on a daily basis. So today, I acknowledge my body and give gratitude to it because it has been supporting my every day throughout my entire life and thus let me finish with the sentence I always finish my classes: Thank you body. You're amazing. I love you ❤
